Training programmes

The NW School of Psychiatry provides an acclaimed, fully-funded Core Psychiatry Course for all CT1s and CT2s, in order to best equip them for their college membership exams. The course is NHS-run, led by NHS consultants and experts in the field of psychiatry.
Trainees are supported to actively contribute to the medical teaching, either by offering psychiatric teaching to medical students both on an individual basis and in groups, or by writing online cases for medical studies.
All trainees have a study leave entitlement and budget which can be used for different educational events.
There are plenty of opportunities for trainees to present interesting cases/journals/topics in local teaching forums.
The North West division of the Royal College of Psychiatrists offers a range of educational events, conferences and programmes for trainees.
The scheme welcomes applicants for Academic Clinical Fellow posts.

Master level certificate modules on ‘Medical Teaching and Learning in the workplace’ and ‘Leadership and Management’, run through Edge Hill University.
The opportunity to apply for an honorary clinical lecturer post at the Medical Universities of Manchester and Liverpool.

All of our Trusts in the North West have their own well-developed Audit and Research departments.
There are strong research collaborations in the North West with the University of Manchester, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre, University of Chester, and Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital Research Centre which is an accredited centre for Phase 1 research trials.
All trainees are encouraged to take part in audits, whether at local, regional and/or national levels.
Higher trainees are also encouraged to supervise the audit projects of junior trainees in psychiatry.

Greater Manchester hosts an inpatient service specialising in mental health and deafness, the John Denmark Unit – one of only three such services in the country.
