Forensic Psychiatry training with the HENW School of Psychiatry offers many benefits:
- Friendly and supportive consultants and colleagues in all placements
- Experience of working across all levels of security (low, medium and high)
- Opportunity and encouragement to gain experience in leadership and management, medical education and clinical research as special interests
- Relatively small geographical footprint; all placements are easily commutable from Liverpool
Above all, this scheme helps trainees gain the necessary skills to move seamlessly towards becoming a consultant.
I would recommend this training scheme to any core trainees considering a career in Forensic Psychiatry.
An excellent scheme which provides placements in different levels of security, low, medium and high, with very supportive and very experienced trainers. There are also ample opportunities for special interest areas. As a higher trainee, I felt very supported and valued.
Forensic Psychiatry Training – Mersey scheme
The Mersey section of the NW Forensic Psychiatry Higher Training Scheme allows trainees to have experience in a range of secure care, including High, Medium and Low secure units. Post Graduate Drs in Training (PGDIT’s) value the range of experience afforded by the scheme.
PGDIT’s spend at least 18 months at the Scott Clinic Medium Secure Service working both with the inpatient service and providing consultation and opinion to colleagues within the Mersey region. Prison experience can be gained at HMP Liverpool and HMP Altcourse, both of whom have well established mental health teams.
Six months are spent at Ashworth High Secure Hospital, one of only three high secure hospitals in England. In addition to working on a variety of inpatient wards, PGDIT’s will have the opportunity to undertake assessments for admission to high security.
Six months are spent in the Low Secure service at Hollins Park Hospital in Warrington, gaining experience in assessment and treatment of patients in Low Secure Care.
There is the opportunity to pursue particular areas of interest and there are a range of special interest sessions and academic opportunities available.
